Day 2 Amarbaysgalant Buddhist Monastery
After breakfast at your hotel, depart for the complex of Amarbayasgalant Monastery , which
was built during 1727-1736, in the honor of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar, the first Bogd (Buddhist
leader of Mongolia). He was also a Founder of the Mongol School of religious art and is
considered one of the greatest Renaissance artists in all of Asia. The richly decorated Machu-
style architecture of this monastery is in perfect harmony with nature and environment.
Originally, Amarbayasgalant Monastery consisted of over 40 temples built on the special
terrace, surrounded by a wall, measuring 207x175 m. Before the communist purges of the
1930s, it housed nearly 2,000 monks. Today, only 28 temples now remain, they have been
under State protection since 1944. Enjoy your afternoon learning more about it and admiring
the hundreds of sculptures of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and guardian deities, many by Zanabazar
himself. Find your inner peace at this special place.

Day 9 Karakorum & Erdenezuu Buddhist Monastery
In the morning, we’ll head to Kharkhorin. Historically known as Karakorum, it was an ancient
capital of the Mongol Empire. Founded in the 13th century by Ogodei Khan (Chingis Khan’s
third son and successor) it was for several centuries the center of the entire Mongolian empire,
a major trading center with caravans coming and going, as well as a model of religious
tolerance in which foreigners were free to have religious debates.
After lunch, we will visit the local museum of Karakorum and learn more about the beautiful
ancient Karakorum city and remarkable Genghis Khan.
We’ll then continue to visit the magnificent old Buddhist Monastery complex of Erdenezuu. The
first temple of Erdenzuu monastery was built in the 1580s, by the order of Dalai Lama, on the
ruin of Mongolian capital, Karakorum. At its peak, the monastery housed over 1000 monks and
had 62 temples. Sadly, in the 1930s, monastery suffered greatly in the communist religious
purges; most of the temples were destroyed and the monks killed. Nowadays, the monastery is
slowly being restored. The monastery is registered in “Heritage of Mongolia” by UNESCO. If we

Today, we will drive to the Hustai National Park. The park is home to the Takhi—the last of the
truly wild horses in the world, also known as Przwalski’s horses. Not that long ago, there were
none left in the wild, but after a successful captive breeding program in various worldwide zoos,
they were reintroduced to their native habitat here in Mongolia. This is the only place in the
world where you can see them in the wild.
Late in the afternoon, we visit the information center and learn more about the park and its
mission and vision. Then we will take a short drive to look for the wild horses in their natural
habitat. Keep in mind that because they are wild, we depend on some luck and right timing to
spot them. We also have chance of seeing other wildlife including marmots, foxes, birds or
roe deer.
